Understanding the Basics of Object Filling in Vectorworks
Filling an object in Vectorworks involves selecting the appropriate colors or patterns that visually enhance your design. The process begins with choosing between solid colors, patterns, gradients, or other filling styles tailored to your project’s needs.
Accessing the Fill Options
Open the Attributes palette, which is usually situated on the right side of the workspace. If it’s not visible, navigate to the menu bar and select Window, then Palettes, and finally Attributes to display it.
- In the Attributes palette, locate the section for Fill options. You will see various boxes that represent different fill styles, including Solid, Pattern, Hatch, and Gradient fills.
Choosing the Fill Type
Click the fill box and a Color Palette will open, allowing you to select from predefined colors or create a custom hue. For solid colors, simply click the desired shade.
- To apply a pattern fill, select the Pattern option within the fill box. This will present a variety of patterns from which to choose. Each pattern will display its unique background and foreground colors that can be customized if needed.
Applying Fills to Objects
Choose the object you want to fill. This can be done by clicking directly on the shape or by selecting it from the Object Info palette.
Once selected, go back to the Attributes palette, choose your desired fill style (solid color, gradient, etc.), and click on the desired option. The fill will instantly apply to the selected object.
- If you wish to apply a hatch pattern, select the object, find the Hatch option in the Fill list, and choose your preferred hatch design from the options provided.
Modifying Existing Fills
To modify a fill that has already been applied to an object, select the object and revisit the Attributes palette.
Click on the fill box to access the color or pattern options again. You can change the color or switch the fill style by selecting a new option from the palette.
- If you need to edit a hatch, right-click on the object, choose Modify, and then select Hatch. You can choose Edit to make adjustments to the hatch’s specifications or color.
Creating Custom Hatches
If existing hatches do not meet your expectations, you can create a custom hatch. Open the Resource Manager from the toolbar, click on New Resource, and select Hatch.
- Click Create, name your hatch, and configure its properties as required before applying it to your shapes.
Using the Eyedropper Tool for Quick Fills
For an efficient workflow, consider using the Eyedropper tool. Select this tool from the Basic palette on the left.
Before using it, set up your preferences by clicking on Preferences in the toolbox. Specify which attributes you want to match, such as fill color, texture, line style, and more.
- Position the Eyedropper over an object with your desired fill and click to pick up its properties. You can then apply these properties to another object by clicking on it with the Eyedropper selected.
